You could eat your dinner off my new engine i.e there is little oil anywhere. I presume that on 1st startup there will be a delay whilst oil gets picked up and forced into the bearing shells etc. Can I get away with that or do I need to dismantle and reassemble as many bearings as I can now and smear with oil before putting in the car?

Cheers alot
J

If it's a rebuild I think it's reccomended to first fill with a thin mineral oil.. Run the engine in for a short while on that then swap to the correct oil. Think you should turn over the engine with the fuel supply disconnected to allow the oil to feed up to the bearings.

when ever i rebuild an engine i oil it down befor i fit the sump. but be warned it's fu#king messy. actually had a system i built for it. it comprised of a high flow electric pump designed to pump oil. half of an old oil or diesel oil drum, a large drain hole in the base of it with a 5 gallon bucket under the hole with the pump sitting in 5 gallons of oil and a hose with a nozzle attatched to the pump. worked bloody wonders. it's just really messy... but never had any of that first start grinding.

interesting technique.

Cheers for that. Without a standalone pump it sounds like I could get away with filling up the galleries in advance, turning over on starter and hoping for the best.... :chin:

Way to do this, is to remove the oil pump, fill with oil, and re-fit. Prime the camshaft with oil and then hand turn the engine to pump the oil round [you can do this with injectors removed to make it easier to turn].
Are the coolant galleries clean?

Andy.:)

Andy - the galleries look v clean with just a bit of oxide on the surfaces. I've also hoovered it. :D

Fiat in Slough told me that demo engines like this dont get used they just sit on stands. There's a v light carbon deposit on the top of the bores so the engine has been run, but looks like not much.

The Porter Manual says to only drop the gearbox and engine as one unit on the diesel. By the looks of what Dazzo did he did this with the subframe still in place.
