Hello all, I am still thinking about buying a used Tipo 1.6 M/jet Estate. Could anyone provide feedback on how they are finding parts prices for their Tipo's and what is the general availability & prices of parts from motor factors for the Tipo ?

I currently have a Stilo Estate and a Croma and parts for both from Fiat dealers are simply too expensive for me. Obtaining parts for the Croma from motor factors is also tricky as Fiat hardly sold any Croma's in the U.K. I have had to resort to importing some parts from Poland for the Croma.

Fiat have always been budget cars, but the parts prices from Fiat dealers are now extortionate. As a example a small 4" rubber fuel pipe for the was £26 from Arnold Clark and £7.70 from a local Vauxhall dealer (exactly the same part)

General service parts are easy to get

There's a lack of availability for other items such as suspension parts certainly form most of the big suppliers even shop 4 parts seems to have limited listings for the tipo

autodoc is pretty good at parts and so is ebay if you can cross over the genuine part numbers. I dont have any bother obtaining parts however it has to be noted that I do work in the Motor Trade.
autodoc isn't a UK supplier however

Allthrough they do deliver to the UK
Fair few part on eBay also presumably sourced from the continent

The link kindly added by jock refers to goods sent from outside the eu to uk
But
Goods ordered from eu and sent to the UK are now also subject to uk vat and if value over £135 uk customs duty as well.
plus lots of delivery companies are charging additional fees for processing the extra paperwork /collection of money for UK government.

The above can easily add 40% or more to the costs pre leaving the European union.

Thanks for the correction Jack. In fact we are just wondering if we are going to be caught by this. My daughter and son in law are pretty tech savvy types and have bought us a "Portal" to turn out TV into a sort of video system. Don't know too much about it yet as it hasn't arrived yet. However I've just today got a shipping confirmation that it's on it's way - coming from Dublin Ireland - so that'll be an EU shipment? This will be interesting?

You didn't need correction Jock, more of a clarification for anyone reading.
The gov website needs updating.

Dublin is in EU you are not, better check your refund rights in case vat, fees etc make purchase economical.

Cheers Jack

I think you're right Jack. Mind you they paid for it, not me. So might still be worth it? I'll just have to see how it turns out. Looks like it cost £149 by the way.

Well, just had delivery confirmation for between 2 and 4 this afternoon - no mention of any extra charges. I've been looking into this "Irish duty thing" I believe that goods traveling between Ireland and Northern Ireland are not subject to duty under the Brexit agreement. So if this shipment is being made via this route and then perhaps across to Scotland, maybe it'll not attract the interest of HM Customs and Excise? Whatever, I'll have the answer before the day is out won't I.

Goods travelling between northern Ireland and southern Ireland and the other way are crossing EU border and so are subject to tax/duty etc.
Things may/ Will slip through I'm sure.
Cheers Jack

Delivery completed. All good. No extra charges. Interestingly the item was purchased from a company in Dublin but I can see from the labeling on the package that the thing itself was actually dispatched from a warehouse in Birmingham England, which explains the lack of duty to be paid. Now all I've got to do is connect it all up - Yet another power adaptor to plug in somewhere! Looks quite an easy setup though, think even I'll cope with it.

This is the beastie: https://portal.facebook.com/gb/products/portal-tv/ My son in law and daughter have given it to us so we can do comfortable video calling with them but it seems to do "other stuff" too? I shall enjoy finding out all about it.

Oh dear, Oldest boy's Punto won't go this morning, reluctant to turn over. He's been having trouble starting it for several weeks now despite going the "long way" round when going to and returning from his place of work - to charge the battery. I checked it over a couple of weeks ago and the alternator is charging well but battery voltage when first tested was low so I strongly suspect the nearly 11 year old battery has thrown in the towel! Being stop/start it's an EFB.

With his wife working from home he can borrow her car for his work so I've a few days without pressure to look for one. Had a quick scout around on line and looks like offerings between around £80 to £130 so not all that frightening - bad enough compared to an old style lead acid jobbie though! I've rung a friend "in the trade" as well and he's going to see what he can dig up tomorrow when he goes into work. Going to give Tanya a look too.

Ok, having done my duty with regard to the boy's battery, I decided to install and set up the Portal device I've been talking about above. Physically pretty easy to do, I've got it sitting on the top edge of the TV, you hardly notice it's there. Then HDMI lead to the TV and power adaptor plugged into the wall. Mind you it's all getting a bit "silly" behind my Telly these days with nine power connections (4 plug type transformers and 5 three pin plugs) All powering electronics so still nowhere near max load permissible at the wall socket. With many more Data type cables - HDMI and Ethernet mainly but also the speaker cabling - adding to the confusion.

Then the big moment, select the correct HDMI link on the TV and switch on the Portal power supply. It all fires off and leads you by the nose, on screen, through connecting wirelessly to the router and then "syncing" (I think that's the word?) to my wife's facebook messenger account - I don't do facebook. We are old and not very "tech savvy" but we only had one wee problem with the syncing and, after a few moment's thought we realized what was needed.

We've just fired the whole thing up and had a half hour chatting to my daughter her husband and the grandchildren down in Wiltshire. I was far from convinced we needed this device when my daughter first suggested it, but, as they bought it and made us a present of it I could hardly refuse. I'm completely converted. It's absolutely b***dy wonderful! We have a moderately big TV, 43" screen, and it's just exactly as if they are sitting in the room with us. The camera at each end is a "clever" camera and automatically (I think using facial recognition softeware) optimize the picture focusing in on my daughter and her husband to begin with and widening the field of view when the grandchildren came into the room. It also tracks people when they move so they don't go out of shot. Sound too is excellent, playing through the TV speakers, with none of the dodgy connecting you get on Skype. I suspect I can probably route it through my big AV Amp if I wanted but there's no need as the TV speakers do a good enough job with speech. In fact you can't compare either picture or sound to Skype at all, it's completely in another league! What an absolutely wonderful way to keep in touch during this lockdown rubbish!

Only found one "glitch" so far. If you use it's own wee, very neat, remote controller to tell it to turn off (sleep) it makes the TV go to sleep too! this is a little annoying but you can also tell it (the Portal) to stand by with mic and camera switched off by manually pressing a wee button on it's side- in this mode you can reawaken it very quickly and I think it also connects and alerts you when an incoming signal is detected so probably the way to go anyway? I would guess it's probably pulling a bit more current in this mode though? Just occurred to me that if I switch the HDMI input to the TV (connect to the Sat box) before telling the Portal to "sleep" that may stop any command from the Portal from shutting down the TV? Must give that a try.

So, if you like Skypeing - or Facetiming - your family and friends I can really, REALLY, recommend you to take a close look at this Portal device. They don't have to have one and can still participate on a mobile or other device - of course they won't get the benefit of the immersive experience the Portal gives.
