Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

Hi folks. My Tipo has some manufacturer warranty left on it till March next year.

Is there anything I could get checked that could be something repaired under warranty, before it runs out?

My other car, a VW Tiguan, had a gearbox and rear spring repaired under warranty which saved me a fortune.

So I'd like to try and get anything done while I still can.

After it runs out, I'll be making a pot of cash for repairs rather then get a new warranty.

One way would be to get an early MOT then a Fiat service, anything safty related should be picked up and then raise it with Fiat at the service so at least the claim is logged within the warranty period.

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

The dealership in Durham (GMD)used to request my car 1 month before warranty ran out to make sure there were no outstanding problems and to ensure car was in good condition before warranty lapsed. Unfortunately GMD closed so I dont know what the only other dealer in North East will do when my Tipo is approaching 3 years old.

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

Thanks. It just had a service at the dealership I bought it from. It's MOT tilled March, which is alo when the warranty expires. So I'll take it in early and get it checked.

I just wondered if there was any common things to look out for.

If I go to a Fiat garage, and ask them to check for warranty repairs, do you think they'd do it, or would they rather do jobs they'd get cash for?

With warranty repairs they dealer gets paid by fiat for the work(book time anyway) at least in the first two years
Not as sure about the 3 year dealer warranty

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

3rd year dealer warranty has to be the same standard as fiat warranty. Just that the dealer makes the decision if itís covered

Yes they reclaim all the costs. However being a dealer they get paid a "Fiat Labour" rate which is normally less than their public hourly labour rate.

Unless you are in a position to do more detailed mechanical inspections then I would just let these be done by the MOT and 3rd year service.

What you can and should do is go over the car with a very general close visible inspection. Some areas to look at:

1) Paint work especially in recess areas such as bonnet, tailgate, doors, etc.

2) Trim Outer fixings - are all the plastic trims, like around the outer windows all sitting down and properly seated, and for any chrome ones still looking good

3) Trim Inner fixings - door cards, pillars, etc. Tap them for rattles etc.

4) Water Ingress - check boot well and accessible areas - e.g. behind any removable covers for changing rear light bulbs etc. Also in the driver/passenger floor area you may have a plastic pop-up flap in the carpet to allow the floor pan chassis number to be inspected (is it dry in there). You could find other areas to poke around without removing internal sill trim to get your hand in under the carpets. e.g. the holes in the carpet below the driver and passenger seats where the seat wires come through

5) Engine bay - check that all the wiring looms, pipes and components are in good and secure condition. It is not uncommon to find something that has been rubbing against something and left a visible mark or minor wear

6) External lighting - go round the car tapping the light units. On my 500X I had a fog/corning lamp which worked OK but when tapped rattled badly. This Fiat replaced with no hesitation

7) Electrical - check that all the windows, interior lighting, puddle lights, etc. are all OK as these are outside of MOT checks

8) anything else you fancy. Just have a good poke around all over the car

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

Hey, I'm going to bounce this and throw in a big bit of ignorance so apologies in advance.

My Tipo has the 2 year manufacturers warranty and then a '12 month additional warranty'.

What is the '12 month additional warranty' when compared to the initial 2 year one? Is it something I needed to transfer into my name when I purchased the car?

This all may be irrelevant as the car was first registered in March '17 so all three years expire soon anyway but I thought I'd try to educate myself a bit better for next time!

Cheers

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

In UK 3rd year is the same cover as first 2 years....Itís just that dealer has to claim back from Fiat the costs.

I must be lucky. I was sent a free 5 year warranty with my 67 plate car.

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

I’ve noticed condensation in my rear lights, is that covered under warranty? Mine went in for a check engine light today, 3 sensors ordered and they also told me my dab aerial is dodgy so they’ve ordered a new one of those too

I had condensation on my rear lights on a Punto at a year old and both changed under warranty no issue.

Re: Warranty repairs before the warranty runs out

Just got her back from warranty work. Had a few sensors and new dab aerial, they said they had resealed the lights as fiat were not handing them out easy. Don’t really believe this story and there was still condensation when I picked her up. Gonna go to another fiat dealer in my area and see if they’ll sort them for me.
