I'm finding that when I start the car warm (roughly 10 - 45 mins after parking up somewhere) I get a really strong smell of oil in the cabin for about 30 seconds. It doesn't smell like burning oil, just the 'normal' smell of engine oil. It only happens when you actually start the engine (you can turn the ignition on and let the blower run for as long as you like without the smell).

It doesn't happen when the engine is cold after sitting overnight.

It had a perished/split breather hose replaced under warranty about a month ago but this hasn't solved the issue. The car isn't actually losing any oil as I have been keeping an eye on it and it is still full.

Has anyone else had this issue at all?

Sounds like spilt oil near manifold/exhaust etc burning off. I had a leak on a BMW from a breather hose and it smelt for months even though I had cleaned everywhere.......

Same here,I've reported it to three different garages and unsurprisingly they can't find anything, also my breather hose is cracked, but it's not a cause for concern !,I'll live with it for now,but I'll make sure it sees a dealer before the warranty ends

Just looked on Google, dunno why I haven't before ?, it's quite a known thing, the cause is the o-ring sealing the oil separator to the rocker cover,it bakes and shrinks, the cure is upgrade to an viton oil ring,1" internal diameter,2.62 cross section,at work until Thursday but guess what I'm doing then !

Thanks Remould. I had mine in the garage last week for them to have a look at but they couldn't find anything (I wasn't surprised!). They did say they had a thorough look and couldn't find any sign of oil leaking anywhere - I might try booking it in again and suggest they look at that though.

I think the issue is it doesn't actually leak oil only fumes,if the garage has a smoke machine for vacuum/air leaks that should find it,The separator is a black plastic box bolted to the n/s end of the rocker cover if you want to have a sniff around there !

That's handy ta,I'll try to get to my dealer and order one, then get one in viton, which has better heat and chemical resistance, which in turn should give it a longer life

My local dealership in Knutsford have replaced this o-ring under warranty and it has solved the issue! Just an update that this is worth a try for anyone that has the same issue in the future.

Update time, finally got around to replacing mine this weekend and yep,no more oil whiffs,16mm bore X 2.5mm section a lot tighter going in ?,the original had squared off so was hardly doing anything!

Just to confirm something else i read online, that is the pollen filter can get contaminated with the breather fumes, i took my pollen filter out to see out of interest and it stinks of old engine oil close up,ECP don't do one,not even cross checking part numbers the main dealer want nearly thirty quid ! (non carbon),so after measuring (199x177x30) the old one and double checking specs on different ones, found a listing on Ebay for 7 quid, the item number is 362592008986 if anyone needs one.

Hi Everyone!

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but is this the seal in question?

This is the one it has the 16 mm inner diameter and 2.5 mm thickness? My Alfa Romeo Giulietta has the same issue (smelly when starting up) plus the whole AOS unit smells. I'd rather buy a rubber seal like this than to get the whole unit.
