My 2019 2080miles 1.4 t lounge developed a loud clunk when turning steering wheel on lock to lock when stationary.Took it in to main dealers to get it looked at.First they told me if it wasn’t covered under warranty I had to pay£118 for diagnosis! They had the car all morning and phoned me stating that they took it for test drive and had it up on the ramps everything was fine and no fault could be found! I wasn’t happy with this and said I wanted to see the mechanic.Went back to dealer and showed him a video I took on my phone of fault. Then walked him to my car where I turned the wheel and showed him the loud clunk from the steering. He looked shocked and said “that’s not right, and that shouldn’t happen”I’ll take it back to the workshop.Later in afternoon I get a phone call saying they have found the fault and there is an internal fault with steering column and it’s not to be driven! Part has to come from Italy 8 to 10 days. Not impressed with events to say the least.Anyone have thoughts on this?

Disappointing, but more on the dealer front than anything else. They can't have looked especially hard if they failed to spot something which you seemed to demonstrate very easily. Also not really on that they jump straight to the line about diagnostics charge for such a new car with such low mileage. I get that they have to cover their ars*s incase it's a non-warranty repair, but there are ways of going about communicating this.

On the fault itself, it's not something I've seen mentioned for the Tipo before, though some Fiat electric steering columns do get clunky as they age (not normally for several years though).

I'm on just over 5000 miles - mine needs a squeely passenger window mechanism, occasionally squeaky passenger central locking mechanism and a couple of bits of corrosion on two of the alloys looking at, but I'll probably get that done closer to service time so that I can hopefully get any parts replaced on the same trip as the service. I had enough trips back & forth to dealers with my Giulietta and am rather enjoying how well behaved the Tipo is.

Hopefully this is just a one-off with your Tipo and it'll be back on good behaviour after its repair.

I hope so because I really like the car. Today I got a call saying car was ready and all fixed. On picking it up was told the fault was the steering rack and it had to be replaced! Was happy it had been fixed quicker than said but stressed I wasn’t really happy with the initial fault finding and being told car was all ok and safe.If I hadn’t asked to see the mechanic and showed him the fault(in less than 5 secs) I would have been driving the car down the motorway with a damaged steering rack! I had a moan at the dealer about this and said I’d contact Fiat UK......Will see what comes back......
