Hi

I'm thinking of buying a Tipo 1.6 MJ II - I found a hatchback in Lounge spec for £11k on an 18 plate and less than 5k miles.

All sounds ok so far. The problem is I cannot get the towing capacity figures from anywhere. Different websites have different numbers ranging from 1200kg to 1500kg.

Our caravan, fully loaded is 1190kg. So, 1200kg is too close to 100%, and 1500Kg is ideal.

Does anyone have definitive numbers? I asked at a dealership and nobody knew, and they didn't have a brochure.

Thanks

A little disappointing that the dealership weren't more helpful to a potential customer.

Here is the Tipo Sales Brochure (pdf). Towing weights are given on the Technical Specifications page towards the end.

Another good source for the towing weights would be the Owner Handbook. This can be downloaded from the Fiat eLum website should you want to confirm the figures in the sales brochure.

Went with an Insignia 2.0 CDTi Ecoflex in the end, which is more than capable than towing our caravan and £0 road tax.

The Tipo could technically tow but the ration would have been near 100%, instead of the recommended 85%.

With the Insignia I can tow up to 1700kg, making the car to caravan ratio just under 70%.

I kind of feel that it is better to get a car that is in control of the caravan, rather than the other way around. The Tipo would have been overwhelmed by the caravan.

It is a shame because I liked the Tipo I test drove.

Only got £200 part ex for my 2006 Croma 8v 1.9 JTD Dynamic. So little for so much car. It was looking, sounding and driving tired though and regularly failed to start.

I looked yesterday and it seems to be 1200k braked and 600 unbraked. I have a Bravo 1.6D 105 HP and it is without any doubt the best tow car I have ever had and with an apparent power deficit on nearly all the others I am not sure why. It pukks my 1200 kg van at any speed you care to do and in any gear hill starts are no issue and the handbrake hold with ease. I am sure the tipo hatch would be as good. The rear overhang on the SW is too long for caravanning as far as I am concerned.
