Commodore 64 an 8-bit computer from the early days. I think it could output 7 colours which might give you an idea of how games looked.

The Amiga was Commodore's next machine - a 16-bit computer - was ace.

C64 specs from Wiki (sorry!)

"During the Commodore 64's lifetime, sales totaled 30 million units, making it the best-selling single personal computer model of all time.[2] For a substantial period of time (1983-1986), the Commodore 64 dominated the market with approximately 40% share and 2 million units sold per year,[3] outselling the IBM PC clones, Apple computers, and Atari computers."

"The graphics chip, VIC-II, features 16 colors, eight hardware sprites per scanline (enabling up to 112 sprites per PAL screen), scrolling capabilities, and two bitmap graphics modes. "

"The sound chip, SID, has three channels, each with its own ADSR envelope generator, and with several different waveforms, ring modulation and filter capabilities. It too, was very advanced for its time. It is designed by Bob Yannes, who would later co-found synthesizer company Ensoniq. Yannes criticized other contemporary computer sound chips as "primitive, obviously . . . designed by people who knew nothing about music."

The C64 was an excellent machine for its time. The Commodore Amiga was even more advanced and had many features on its release in 1985 (multi-tasking, 'windows' style operating system, very advanced graphics and multi channel stereo sound synthesis etc.) long before IBM PC's and even Apple could offer machines of equal spec. and performance. The let down was that Commodore never developed the machines properly afterwards and their marketing tactics in the late 1980's were abysmal. They had the chance to dominate the world's computer base and be what the PC is today but they blew it and went bust. Damn!

:D

The Amiga was a 32-bit computer, it was just that the 68000 processor on the earlier machines only had a 16-bit external data bus, despite internally being 32-bit. OS was 32-bit.

It was a great machine.

Troy.
