I found tesco and natwest the cheapest... im with natwest (17 at the time.... with a 1.0 2001 corsa and a paid £2800.... i changed to a 2001 1.2 8v punto and had to pay an extra £530!

If you're not planning on modifying your car, I'd go with Co-Op Insurance 'cos they're really cheap but only insurance standard cars.
Otherwise try Adrian Flux, they're good for modified cars as visual modifications don't effect premiums.
With most companies, any modification (that includes lowering) will put your premium up by a fortune. With lowering springs and alloy wheels, I was getting quoted over £3,500 (yearly) by most companies; like I said before though you can go with Adrian Flux and then it won't effect premiums.

thats incredibly expensive! I think insurance in general (unless you've got 5yrs+ NCB) has gone up, as mine has been the same for 2yrs now, and looking to be same again after 3yrs! so going from none, to 1yr NCB to 2yr NCB and NO discount! thats going with whatever company I can find at the time

Endsleigh ripped me off man. I'm going with Admiral soon, its £1,000 cheaper, i've had a crash and modified my 1.2 GP, how they have worked it out i don't know!
