Back for some guidance from the wise folks gathered here.

On a 450 mile trip, just 40 miles out of Calais, my Marea 1.6 manual started making a horrible scraping noise whenever I backed off the accelerator - power on was fine, but slackening off to slow down was just torture. So I sort of nursed it between 70 and 80, hoping nothing would go bang. After another 50 miles, it stopped doing it. This was repeated briefly on the way home, but hasn't happened since.

Differential perhaps?

PS 43 miles to the gallon over 450 Miles - at the sort of speeds I was doing to catch the boat - what an amazing car!!

Check your gearbox oil level for a starter. If the noise is coming from up front it could be a thrust bearing in the gearbox that is overheating. As the gears are helical (cut at an angle) they force against different thrust bearings when on and off the power.
