Have not used my Fiat Punto 1997 60S for 3 and half weeks. Thought battery flat, but charged for 24 hours, used starter booster machine, and also tried another battery. Called out RAC who could not start either and fitted new starter motor, but still will not start. Has been out in all the rain whilst stood 3 and half weeks. HELP....

Hello and welcome to here :) post down in the punto tech section so the guys down there can help you ..good luck (y)

get a spark plug (a spare one) and remove and ignition lead.

Place on the engine (so it is earthed) and see if it sparks.

It is most likely it is not, in which case replace the RPM or "crank" sensor which is the thick black lead and sensor near the timing belt.

Inspect it first though, it might just be dirty (it works by picking up a magnetic reading off the pulley).

Why did the RAC replace the starter motor? Does it not turn over (crank) at all?

If not, do the dash lights come on as normal? Keycode light goes out?

Did they check the starter wiring/ gearbox-chassis earth cable?

No, it doesn't turn over at all. It does try, but gets no further, it sounds like flat battery, but that possibly ruled out as RAC threw everything at it.

Dash lights all come on and go off as normal on start up attempt.

Not sure if they checked starter wiring/gearbox-chassis earth cable.

Many thanks for help.

If it's turning over then the starter motor should be ok.

If the fuel cut-off (inertia) switch hasn't been triggered (passenger footwell) then it all points towards a faulty RPM (crank) sensor on the bottom pulley, though the RAC mechanic should have checked this as it's an obvious point.

Can't work out why they changed the starter motor if it turns over ok? Did they not plug in their diagnostic computer?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Sent Punto to the garage yesterday, and they have fixed for me today. The alternator had seized and therefore trapped the belt, which would not let the engine turn over. Hope this might help someone who has the same problem in the future.
