I tried like a fool a couple of weeks ago to install some Win ME software on win XP for a camera, a warning popped up saying it could harm the system and do I still want to proceed. I reached across for the mouse to hit cancel and hit the enter key on the numpad like a fool:bang:

Now everytime my system starts it does a CHKDSK check even though I have unscheduled it. half of my start menu is missing, certain accessories like paint and the system tools such as system restore.

I can still get to system restore via the pathway so it exists but the link has gone missing. However, the restore makes no difference.

I also think certain System32 files have gone missing from the folder:(
Games that won't load keep popping up saying certain files are missing from system32 etc..... I can't uninstall and reinstall them because the installer won't run.

Basically its beyond repair. The simple solution is to back-up my files and reinstall windows, simple:rolleyes: yeah right, like its that easy.

I had my computer made for me at a computer fair using an ASUS motherboard as a base. Then everything else was whacked in and put in a light-up, cooling tower:D However it was a shell with no OS on it.

I took it to a guy who charged me just the price of a registration key and he used his windows XP home disk to install onto my computer. Now as far as i'm aware this is legitimate. The guy runs a computer business so he knew what he was talking about.

The question is can I use any Windows xp Home disk and use the product registration key on the sticker on the back of my tower or does it have to be the same disk. This really isn't an option as the guy has moved away:(

Also can anybody think of another way to solve my problem?

Thank god for that, was worried I would have to go out and buy a new disk.

Now I just need to find someone with a XP Home disk..........................

Cheers for the help guys.

Any ideas what caused the problem in the 1st place. Why would installing windows ME compatible software delete sys32 files?

Plus you don't have to pay £1 an hour to speak with some numpty indian in Mumbai :D

yup can use any home CD even a downloaded copy legally :)

funny story, you ever read the disclaimers/T&C of owning legit windows?

me either but been told in there somewhere it states that can enter your home and check your computer and all your data, however, if you use a cracked copy its all invalidated

My old school's computer technichian used to read all the licsencing agreements word for word and he told us that some of them have some silly stuff in. There was one once that said that its illeagal to copy or duplicate the program in anyway. But said nothing about using a cracked, copied or keygen on it :D It was some major program like office of something. Quite funny really.
