Tints on windscreen are illegal, obviously, and any after market tints are a grey area (no pun!) Technically they can leave the factory with tints allowing 80% of light through, or you can buy the car like it. But technically its illegal to have them added afterwards. But I see many Audi A8s with stupid tints on the front from the factory, but then police dont bother old people cause they have had a lifetime to realise how incompetent our laws are and are more likely to cause a fuss.
Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%. The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, then the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.
Its legal to tint your front windows, but only very lightly. Most modern vehicles come out of the factory with around 72% VLT therefore meaning that you can tint them, but only by around 2% (hardly noticeable.

The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.
