Is there anyone there, who may know the answer? We have a Fiat Tipo 1.4 petrol 1994. The problem seems to be electrical, but no one locality deals with Fiat cars.
The symptoms are:

Oil light lit on dash board, though the ignition key is not in the ignition.... smoking coming from the rear of the engine..... car starts, but stops very soon afterwards.

The problem only started after the old battery was taken off the vehicle and a new one was fitted within a couple of minutes.... the polarities are the right way around. The old battery was not flat when it was taken off the car.

If anyone has any ideas, please email me on [email protected]

Thanking you

No one has replied to my question, but just in case someone gets the same problem in the future, it was the alternator...... don't know how or why it should cause the oil light to be lit, but a refurb alternator has cured the problem.... no more light and the battery is OK....No more smoke either, except of course from the exhaust.... hope this helps someone in the future.

I had this same problem occur twice on my 1.6 DGT.
The rectifier diodes inside the alternator died in such
a way they they were no longer working as diodes I think.

Basically it flattened the battery completely within an hour.
While the engine was running it was ok.
