hi evweryone,i need some advice concerning my clutch.

i have a 2001 8vfiat palio petrol model,

there is this constant whirring noise coming from the gearbox. The sound disappears when the clutch pedal is pressed in.

First diagnosis was the release bearing.
What the hell,i replaced the clutch and pressure plate along with the new release bearing.
Drove ok for a few months and it came back.

Gearbox out again, entire box was disassembled, gears were checked and needle bearings replaced, even though there was no damage or wear.

Release bearing ,along with clutch was fine.
But,just to be safe, popped new release bearing in again.
The damn sound is still there!!
i am at my wits end.
can anyone shed some light please.

The release bearing is new, needle bearings are fine, clutch is fine.
The whirring noise disappears when i press in clutch pedal.
The sound is definitely comin from the gearbox, its a constant whirring, crrrr sound.

Thanks guys

good afternoon,

i believe to be going through the same symptoms. are you still active here, or anyone else to comment? would like some feed back on this so i know what im possibly facing with my car.

Hi and welcome.

Americas cars might be different, but on a lot of gearboxes fitted to the FIRE engine the input shaft bearing is weak, especially if oil gets low.

It can cause these symptoms, being noisy then quiet with the clutch depressed (as the input shaft stops turning).

Conflicts a bit with the OP above:

My gearbox (169 Panda) is different, doesn't have needle bearings but ball bearings which showed obvious damage, the bearing cage had disappeared.

Might cause no problems apart from being noisy, but can break up and damage the gearbox internals.

I would get the input shaft bearing and seal replaced when next doing the clutch.

There might be a inspection window on the top of the bell housing. If you stick a finger in (engine off!), it will be dirty, dry soot OK, if it's oily the input shaft bearing and seal have failed.

thanks for having me, and providing an amazing reply.

i have a br palio actually, the 1.0 5 door 98. yeah im fearing its a leak at the axels, and didnt like that the last mechanic didnt inform me on its last visit.

the axels are covered in oil, so i attempted to add more lubricant to the trans but it was full. so im confused, is there more than one oil resivoir in the trans, or is my leak somewhere else? im not losing engine oil i check constantly. i jumped on this post cuz i have a loud whir happening at around 40km/h, whether a gear is engaged or not.

im not a mechanic but have always been a DIY kinda person so im also looking for more info like the trans model in my vehicle and or files online like pdf or something, even a repair manual just to understand. that way when i find a new mechanic i can play the waters before deciding who takes the repair.

just not a lot of info in my side of the net so i figured this was the right place to ask.

thanks in advanced

Is this any help? Again, Brazil cars might be different.

My driveshaft seals were also leaking so I replaced them. Possible on the car but much easier when the gearbox is off.
I don't think they could cause the noise you describe, if gearbox oil level is correct.

it helped a little.

whats really confusing me now is the possibility that the gear box is full of lubricant. since i filled and and barely added any before it poured out. maybe i have a power steering leak up top that makes its way down and around the the oil pan, it did look like non burnt oil. still doesnt explain the loud whir. mayber the power steering fluid is making it down the axels and removing the grease in the bearing? but i think i just went down a rabbit hole with that one.

is it possible there's multiple fill ports for the gearbox?

Possibly, the diagram shows three plugs, numbers 7,8 & 10.
I can't see where No. 10 is, but it's possibly a filler plug for the differential on the rear?
Same size as the filler plug on the front of the gearbox (M22), then maybe No. 8 is a smaller (M18) drain plug for both.
Sorry I can't confirm, my gearbox on my 1.2 FIRE is different to the diagram.
Does the owners manual mention it anywhere?

Number 7 is the filler/level plug
