Noticed a high pitched whining noise coming from rear of car today.Car is just ticking over in neutral and noise is coming from under the rear. Maybe the transfer case?Anyone had similar?

Ok after a bit of listening it seems that the noise is from the rear drivers side somewhere near the back wheel.
Funny thing is, if I press the central locking button the noise disappears for a second or two then resumes .

Jason I have a similar whining noise, which I suspect may be the diesel pump. When I turn the ignition on the whining lasts for about 5 seconds; but when the engine is started it is on all the time. It is not loud, and the diesel engine and radio cover it up; but I am sure that this is a new feature on my car !

Mines petrol so maybe petrol pump noise.

Having it checked by local garage today along with creak from front suspension, car has 3 months warranty so might aswell use it.

I will let you know if anything is found.

Thanks Jason, I shall await your report. As a matter of interest I also experience creaking from the front suspension, but only when I hit speed bumps at about 20 m.p.h. instead of an anoying 10 m.p.h. On normal roads there is no problem.

Local garage checked car today and found no problems with suspension.

They said they couldn't hear the whining noise but I still can , maybe its not loud enough for them to consider being a problem and im being noise sensitive.

Im gonna get a second opinion I think.

Jason I am glad that your suspension is ok. As regards your whining have you listened for the noise when the ignition is turned on. As mentioned in an above post my whining disappears after about 5 seconds when only the ignition is on. Start the engine and it is there all the time.

My local garage who had recently serviced the car also could not hear the noise, but when they checked it the engine was running, because at the time I did not realise it could also be heard in ignition on mode as well. I feel sure it must be the diesel pump, my only concern is whether this is normal, or is another hefty bill around the corner.

Regards.....

I had another garage check the whining noise and they said it was just operational noise and some pumps make a little noise.

Rang a fiat dealer and they said the same.

Going to ignore it unless it gets worse.

I've got the noise on my diesel as well. Didn't sound like anything untoward to me, and just assumed it was the diesel pump. Wife has one as well, so must remember to check at the weekend if hers does it as well....

Jason and Dekhog; with the ignition switched on, and the engine NOT running, do you hear the whinning; and does it go off after about 5 seconds.

When I turn the ignition on with the car not started I hear the petrol pump prime for a few seconds. Normal operation I think.

When I start the car I hear a faint whining noise from the the rear of the car , not loud but still noticeable if I listen.

Hi Jason, Do you think the whining you here when the engine is running is the same as that coming from the petrol pump when you first turn the ignition on. I am sure mine are linked.

The sound of the pump priming and the slight whining noise are definately coming from the same place, so yes I think they are linked.
