I have a MK2 2000 1.2 elx a few weeks ago the whining noise started intermitently occuring a couple of occasions for a short period but recently the noise has been alot more frequent starting after a couple minutes of running and pretty much constant, along with this the temperature gauge keeps going all the way up to the top and then back down to the average when the engine isnt anywhere near that hot?
Any help on how to fix this?

As rallycinq said, check your coolant levels. Possibly flush the coolant and re-fil. The whining noise is most likely the fan at it's highest setting, there are 2 settings on the fan and the highest setting isn't used until the car starts overheating. Cure the overheating problem and the fan will stop whining
