Looking to install a mckchrich chip in my spi cinq.
I have a soldered in chip ECU. I have removed the soldered in chip and got myself a socket, however the socket only allows soldering from one side, and not both as required.

I have had a search and struggled to find a socket that allows soldering both sides, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello,

Have you tried a google lens image search?

Two days ago I've managed to source several looms that use same bulb sockets for the rear light cluster for my girlfriend's car, as the original ones are no longer available at the dealership, and the few places when they are available online are trying to charge as much as for half of the car :(

A search showed 5 or 6 different models of cars of different makes, ordered one and will be there tomorrow :) So I will be able to replace it during the weekend.

Problem is, I don't know what I need. At the moment I have a circuit board with no chip on it. Google lense isn't going to know what it's looking at from there :(

No problem. Hopefully someone has done this before, I did the hard part of removing the old chip, just need to know how to get the socket sorted and I am good to go.

I don't understand why you say the chip is soldered in place? It's not (well, not in the two ECUs I have). It's retained with a bit of glue and a plastic clip and pretty easy to remove from the board. First picture is with the original chip in place, but glue and clip removed (you can see the clip in the photo) and the second with a cheap £30 ebay chip in place.

This is a Punto ECU. I want to have 1 stock ECU and 1 with a performance chip in it to easily swap between.
I did look at trying to buy another ECU, but they are quite pricey now and I can solder it for free (once I know which chip socket I need), so went that route :)

Oh I see.. 👍🏻 Yeh I have two ECUs, 1 stock and one eBay chipped. Stock is currently in the car.

My car struggles with emissions with the performance chip, so having a stock ECU to swap back too for MOT time makes it easier.

Do you mean the board does not have through holes ?

I am struggling to understand what you are asking for here?

From what I've understood the OP wants to have an easily chip swappable ECU. But the chip in his ECU was soldered directly to the PCB, contrary to icheatatscrabble's. In his case a socket (base) is soldered to the PCB, so chips can be swapped easily. Once you open the ECU.

However I don't quite understand how an element can be soldered on one side or two sides. Does it mean top side and bottom side on the same side of the PCB, or both sides of the PCB (pins should be longer)?

The top and bottom of the board have connections to the chip. Pics are attached with the chip removed.

Managed to find the correct socket, soldered it in, but now have an error and the car won't start :(

I've checked the connections meter through ok, and all appears fine!? Any ideas

That’s a standard through hole board, no need to solder it from both sides just solder it properly from the back.

Got any pictures of after it was soldered ?

Won't win any awards, but it's adequate!

It wouldn't work with the OE chip anyway as it's an ECU from a Punto 1.2 not a cinq 1.1.

But to answer your question, that got destroyed during removal.

I didn't know whether this error is something to do with the immobiliser, and not necessarily the chip specifically? I don't know much about the "performance" chip that I tried in it other than it worked in my cinq ECU. I don't know if there is some coding locking it to my original ECU or not? I may be chasing an issue that isn't there if that makes sense
