On my 2002 Seicento Sporting and does it need replacing at service time?
In fuel pump assembly & is no longer a service item on MPI Sei's. The only reason to replace it is if it gives issues.
Basically any muck in the fuel with the in-line filter was held in the filter slowly blocking it. I think on the MPIs the fuel is filtered before it enters the pump so, in theory, any muck picked up simply falls to the bottom of the tank when the engine is turned off.

Cheers, that's saved me £20!
there is also a gauze filter on the end of the SPI fuel pump pickup, i assume the MPI does have more than this inside the tank tho !
