jarrow - tyne and wear
Ok last year my car failed its mot due to the rear brake shoes and rear brake cylinders being shot so i had them replaced, now yesterday i put the car in for its mot only to find it needs another rear brake cylinder replacing. The thing i find abit dodgy is its the same garage that did the mot last year. Granted there were things wrong with car that i actually knew about and they picked them up but rear brake cylinders 2yrs running.............hmmmmmmm

DEFINITELY dodgy.

In my experiences some garages have a habit of spotting particular 'problems'. Especially ones which can be difficult to prove without some reasonable experience.

I had a case where a garage said a brake caliper needed replacing. I KNEW full well that this was a load of cr@p but had it verified seperately (my stepdad is a mechanic!).

So for a laugh I simply cleaned the caliper (exterior only) so it was looking almost like new.

Took it back, told him I'd had it replaced and who would have thought, it was suddenly fine?

I managed to refrain from punching the idiot and no, I never used them again.

So it's POSSIBLE to have a recurring fault but I'd be very suspicious - especially if they know you're likely to get the work done by them (which of course you're not obliged to do, but many do).

That is dodgy, standard practice is to replace both sides even if only one is shot. How many times have you read this about dampers, pads, discs etc???

Also, they don't take the wheels off for MOT's so how did they know thtta the cylinders were goosed??? A few years ago I fitted new front pads to my pals dad's car. A couple of months later it failed it's MOT (at the dealer) because "The front pads are worn" It turns out that he usually got the car serviced there as well. Because they didn't fit the pads, they just assumed that they must have been worn!

A popular "fail" used to be "ah mate, yer headlights need adjusting - that'll be another tenner please."

next year i will be checking every inch of the car very carefully before its mot !

same with services. fill your washer bottle before it goes in or they'll charge you for refilling it. only a couple of quid i know, but it's the principle of it!

what bugs me is they charged me for adjusting the headlight, i knew it needed adjusting as my g/f crashed the car and it was new...............i mean it was almost right and all they did was adjusted it just like i did using the adjusting screws
