My battery died a while back and the RAC call-out man put his machine on it and said it was knackered. He said he could replace it. I was in a rush so I let him.

Now this new battery really struggles to start the engine when cold.

This new battery is an RAC005 12v 100Ah 830A(EN)

Have I been sold a pup? If so what spec battery should I be using?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome Tom,

Prior to the battery failing did it turn the engine over rapid?

In March this year I replaced my battery in my '05 2.8JTD with a 12V 100Ah 830A so I would expect the spec' of your replacement would be correct.

The old battery easily turned the engine over.

Thanks for the help. I will get the RAC back out to get it sorted.

I did 4 hours on the motorway today. There was no dashboard warning to say the battery was discharging. Stopped for diesel and the battery would hardly turn over the engine, Luckily it started up at the 5th or 6th attempt.

Going to get the RAC back out tomorrow and see what his battery tester says.

It is not all about the battery you bought.
Did you test why your old battery failed? (they don't last forever)

But other faults can kill your battery and should be tested.
eg. A faulty electrical circuit/short.

What type of battery have you got? SLA battery?
Take it to any battery place.
They should be able to test the battery.
It will show your CCA in your battery.
It's usually a free test. It should be around 830 CCA.

But....
Have you tested your alternator? ( This is a very simple test with a multimeter.)
If it is not working, your battery won't be charging and will go flat running on lights etc
very quickly.

Is your battery charging whilst driving?
Is your battery holding charge?

You may have a problem with the Alternator or alternator belt?
Have you tested these things?

Not turning over the engine is a sign of a flat battery.
4 hours driving is enough to charge the battery to full charge.....if the alternator is working!
