Could any one tell me what the thing in the photo is, the one on my project car got really hot and smelt the first time I tried to start it and I am worried it has a fault.

Dim dip resistor for the headlights. There are various threads on the forum in Uno/Panda sections years ago.

It reduces the light from the headlights, and was a mandatory thing for a few years in the UK. Complete waste of time and not needed these days. If you want to keep it original unplug it, if you’re not bothered you can chuck it away!

It may have just got damp/oil/crud on it and never happen again, but you don’t need it.

Ooh, it's like I'm psychic! Saw the thread title and thought "it's a dim dip resistor" before I opened it up.
