It was last Friday, when I was driving on the motorway, the battery warning light went on suddenly. But the voltage of battery was ok (I can tell this from the luminance of the headlights). I stopped my car and open the bonnet. The belt was tight and the alternator worked good, just the warning light was lit. When I started the engine in the morning, the warning light was lit again and wouldn't go off. I smelt there was something was burning, but not strong. The alternator was hot, very hot, even can't be touched. And I also heard something was squealling, but it's not from the alternator. When I checked my car in the afternoon, everything was ok, the warning light went off when the engine was started.

Can anybody tell me what's wrong with my car? It's the alternator's problem or the selenium rectifier's problem? THX!

had the same problem with mind, was down the the alternor packing up, the noises was down to a bearing in the alternor its self. Replaced the alternor and car was fine
