That sounds bad both replies so far are good.

Don't drive it till you know what is wrong. If it is something you can fix yourself great, if not then go to mechanic.

Can you ask the yellow angels to help you? You may have cover through insurance.

The noise rises and falls with the engine, so is not the fan. This noise is also typical of a bearing failing, and is unlikely to be internal to the engine.

Possible causes:
Alternator (Quite likely)
Aircon pump if fitted (least likely)
Water pump
Cambelt tensioner (Likely, but they usually sing a slightly higher note)
Clutch release bearing (Quite likely)
Gearbox shaft bearings (Possible, and disappointingly expensive)

Determine if the noise is at the front of the engine or the rear. Front is at the timing belt, rear is at the gearbox.
Front: Remove the auxiliary belt to rule out, or in, the alternator or aircon. If noise still at the front, needs a cambelt, tensioner and water pump, always do the lot together.
Rear: Does the noise go away or change if the clutch is depressed. If it changes with the clutch depressed, it is most likely the clutch release bearing. Replace the whole clutch, using a good brand such as Valeo or LUK, don't save money here, doing the job twice is not clever.

Check the gearbox oil level. If it is ok, the bearings are likely to be ok. Is there, has there been any leaks from the gearbox? All leaks will stop if left unattended, when the vital fluid is all gone.

Thank you guys.
It is not my car, it is my gf's car so will try to answer your questions.
It started doing it suddenly.
No air con is being used when it makes the noise.
The timing belt was changed 5 years ago (unfortunately i don't know how many Kms the car had then).
Now it is at 120000km
Never been parked for a long time.
She has been using it since the problem appeared for a month (light use due the quarantine in my country).
Now that the workshops are open she will visit a mechanic(I hope). But she is kinda used to the noise and I am afraid that the car will fail if she won't go asap.

Seriously it could go very expensively wrong because none of us know what it is.
Stop using it until either you can get a definitive answer on here or it can be seen my a mechanic.
What about the person who fixed exhaust manifold?
Does your gfs insurance cover road rescue , I forget what the German for yellow angels is.

Its all Greek to me.. :)

Yellow angels = adac
The ADAC is an automobile association in Germany, founded on May 24, 1903, as German Motorbiker Association, and given its present name in 1911. With more than 21.2 million members in December 2019, it is the largest automobile club in Europe

DO NOT CALL HELLS ANGELS by mistake!

I remember seeing a top gear episode year's ago with a ADAC mobile workshops/rolling road
Don't know if they are an actual thing they have driving around or just a special occasion vehicle e.g shows ect
But would massively put anything in the UK to shame even now

That reminds me of something like a fraying/knackered aux' belt... but it's possibly a bit too metallic, so it could be the alternator bearing, cam-belt tensioner or a pulley.

Best to get in there and isolate what's making the noise. If it's on the left at the front don't drive the car any more until you get it fixed.

If the noise is at the back or on the right hand end, then something will eventually break and cause a breakdown, so your girlfriend can decide when she wants to fix it/depending how lucky she feels.

It needs urgent attention though, so give her a hint to get it to a mechanic.

Did this ever get sorted?. Mine has the same noise but it disappears after 30 seconds. Usually does it when it's been stood for a week or two. Thanks.

Pull off the serpentine belt

(Fan belt)

If noise stops.. you know its in that driven train ;)

These tend to have a sprung idler tensioner.. so its a 5 minute job

Did the same with my Grande recently (y)
