theres bugger all wrong with indesit.

I used to work for Indesit building ovens, theres alot wrong with Indesit but thats mostly the management being Italian rear-ends....I'l stop (about the management) before I start a major rant about people you don't know!

I certainatley wouldn't buy an Indesit out of principle, that and I know they tried manufacturing appliances from known to be faulty stock in gas cookers, luckily they all failed the testing

I can't comment on build quality for other departments in general but the UK manufactured goods were fine, we field tested a few, including a fridge, freezer and oven. All are still fine, my dad used to be a construction line specialist and my mum worked on the sub-building side of things till the factory was moved to Poland.

Old vs new wise, old stuff cost a fortune at the time and lasted a fair while, new costs less and is expected to be replaced by the manufacturers (at least Indesit anyway) so to keep the price down comes at the cost of longevity in general.

UPDATE.
Remind me about diodes please, they're only supposed to have continuity in one direction aren't they?

Yes.....but while they are still fixed to the board there will always be a chance of spurious readings owing to the fact there may be other current paths via the other various components.

Slightly OT

Not one to normally take an interest in threads like this, but with an impending move to my own place at last (hopefully) i am need of a washing machine (whether it gets used or not, thats a different story)

I dont really know much about washers, but i had heard of Indesit as a make but 18 months and problems has put me off considering them.

Im not after top specs or anything pricey but what do you recommend?

If i dont hear much interest will make my own thread at a later date :)

bosch everytime.

tbh a lot of modern machines fail in there first 18 months. id recommend getting an extended manufacturer warranty as well.

The Hoover washing machine we have is going strong and has a 9kg, large drum capacity. It's 9 months old so far; not sure what it cost though (n)

I agree with this ! Also the brand name isn't always a guide to quality. We bought frost free upright freezer, by AEG.It cost a lot. After about 3 years the compressor went, and it wasn't worth replacing it - and it turned out that the compressor was actually made by something like Hotpoint anyway as I think they own the AEG brand.:bang:

thanks for the advice will have a shop around at these suggested makes, i also need a fridge freezer and a cooker but there arent any threads on those yet so will make one at a later date

Indesit own alot of brands; including Creda (rarely used), Hotpoint and Ariston (Hotpoint-Ariston products also appear sometimes) and a few more.

Id go with a mid range Miele unit if funds permitted (Ive seen a fair number of these 20 years+ in service, IIRC currently anything over ~£800 has a 10 year warranty).

Bosch units are generally nice and well priced for what they offer.

We have a Hotpoint unit here that seems OK, but I think it'll be dead in a few years with the use it gets here!!

Go German. British engineered white goods are often pretty poor, and avoid anything American unless its expensive or commercial quality.

@John/Applesei, PM me nearer the time and I'll see what we can come up with (my dad run's an appliance supply firm, so would be well placed to give advice on the matter)

@the OP, diodes only conventionally conduct in one direction, but do conduct in reverse (permanently) if the breakdown voltage is reached!

I worked in a kitchen interiors company last year and we always used to sell Miele as our biggest preference followed then by Bosch.

We never used to get any of the above returned back to us or complained about. We also used to sell Whirlpool one's if customers requested them but they were always going wrong or if we needed to get hold of the manufacturers they were a joke.
