The TA gets nothing like its claimed MPG.
Diesels got a reputation for being unreliable because of the DPF filter and people using them for round town driving.
Use them properly and the DPF causes no issues at all.
Certain things can be cheaper, I'e no plugs leads or coils to replace, but there is a fuel filter, which is a fairly infrequent change. There is glow plugs but as long as they work they don't need changing. not like a spark plug that needs changing if you so much as look at it wrong (or so it seems with modern cars)
Diesels don't tend to run as hot, so that can reflect in exhausts degrading quicker, but then they tend to be used for longer distance journeys which tends to off set that issue.
Its very much a case of swings and roundabouts and your use case will dictate which is better. I live in a rural area, do loads of long journeys, and so diesels work out better and cheaper to run. I also like the extra torque that comes with a diesel.
Point of note, in Fiats the Diesel engine options, especially on the later cars can often be the most powerful. through the last 10 years fiat got rid of any engine it seems that had even a shred of power.
The last decent car they made in my opinion is the 500X with the 2.0L diesel and 4wd through a 9 speed ZF auto box. the engine, and gear box combo in that car was bomb proof, far better than the tiny 1.0 litre highly strung turbos they stuck in some of the later models.
