not related dan but have you had your car from new?

we both have nearly identicle registration except for one number they could be brothers!!

Hehehehehehe :) Join the club.

Its the front CV joint starting to wear. Its taken me about 6 months to track the bloody noise down.

Jack the front wheel up and hit it bloody hard with the palm of your hand (on the rubber bit obviously!) and see of it rattles. If it does reach behind and grab the driveshaft and then hit the wheel again.

Re: Re: VERY ODD

this is whats i was on about before, it does sound a bit like nails in a tin lol. so its the CV joint then?
is this dangerouse not getting it fixed??

matty

nice to know ya identified the problem though ;)

Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

If it breaks off you could lose your wheel. If it's still intact you should be OK.

Shabash!

Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

Um.. how could the CV joint cause you to loose a wheel???

Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

I asked the Fiat people to check it at the last service and they say its fine. There is very little play in it, just enough to make that bloody rattle. I'm going to re-pack it with grease sometime.

Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

If it breaks surely you have fewer parts holding the wheel onto the car (or at least that was what I was told when mine went on my Punto).

Hold on, that was a Fiat dealer who told me.

Ho hum, always nice to cock up on here once in a while. I'll get me coat.

Shabash!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

:) The CV joint is not part of the holding wheel on assembly.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

IF the cv joint goes you will lose drive and pos gear box damage if the drive shaft come's out it will be flying around the engine bay

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

Yes but they very VERY rarely 'go'. You get 1000's of miles of ever increasing clunking and if you haven't changed it by then its your fault for ignoring it. :)

What eventually happens is the ball bearings wear to such an extent that the inner part of the CV joint simply rotates without turning the rest of the joint and you loose traction.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

Am I getting mixed up with the "bottom ball joint" or are they one in the same?

Shabash!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

YOU are getting mixed up the bottom ball joint is at the bottom of the suspension leg and the track control arm to let you turn left and right.

The cv joint is three bearing's on a shaft in a housing coved by a rubber gaitor to keep in the grease in.

This shaft is from the gear box to the front wheels.
The cv joint give you drive to the wheels at differnat angles

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

Its actually 6, not 3. The tripode joints at the gearbox are made up of 3 roller bearings.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

Yup, if that fails your wheel will be left flapping in the breeze.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

Well 12 left and right.
And the 2 outter near the wheel's move in and out and the 2 inner are fixted. :p

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: VERY ODD

The outer ones are fixed, the inner ones move in and out :)

Sorry, I'm just a pedant :)
