Technical valve stem oil seals

How the feck do you remove the old ones? I dont know if its just my oil ones in my new head being akward or what, but whenever i try to pull them out as it says in haynes manual it just bites off a little chunk of the plastic and the rest remains. The pic in the haynes shows them really exposed, but that must be the 899 head.

So, how can i remove the old crusty valve stem oil seals?

long nose pliers. Ive got some long nose pliers that are perfect and I have done many valve stem seals with them. If you have too much more trouble I dont mind coming and giving you a hand as I see you are in Kent.

Thats what ive been using, just when im gripping and pulling up, they're just falling apart as it would seem the plastic has disintegrated. Think i may just carefully split them with a scalpel.

Not sure what other options there are
