I am thinking that the valve clearances haven't been checked on my 8v Mk2 for a good while. I know it is not difficult to check them, but it looks downright fiddly to adjust them. The car is X reg and done 77k miles.
Does anybody know do they need a lot of adjusting generally?

if its easy to check then go ahead and check, then worry about adjusting should it be required.

generally so long as you are still getting decent compression (also an easy test) and the valve gear isnt noisy then there isnt a problem. But then im not to fussed about power output or a few percent saving in fuel.

tappet noise is annoying and potentially bad. But no noise is worse because it means the cam clearance has closed up. This can wedge the valves open and they can get burnt.

So go ahead and check the clearances. You only need to get anything done on any that are below the minimum clearance.
