General Urgent help needed-wont start

Hi got a 00 plate 2litre jtd:

Topped up with some diesel and around 20mile later started to feel lumpy at low revs onlt slight but i could feel it,so thought nothin of it so did abit of shoppin but when i re started the car around30mins later it took afew gos to start which was very odd as it has always started first turn even when cold.

Thought it might have been bad diesel so topped up with some more but again took around three turns to start but felt abit better low down when driving,decided to change the glow plugs but still stugles to start but it runs fine when its going as i had 90mph on a private rd its just turning it over.

Anyone have a clue as i need a car for work 2moz so might have to buy another cheap runner till i get this sorted.

Have you checked the fuel filter and bled any water from the bottom outlet?
Also do the usual air filter oil etc.

Any info coming up on the display?

Was suggested to me it could b the heater box for the plugs as i mentioned that two of the old plugs were full of black hard stuff abd two were oiled up,Was gona cross the plugs to see if there gettin a current from the box but no volt meter or decent cable.
Not checked filter yet where is it located???theres a big canister in the middle of the engine bay but looks like its for the imissions,if the diesel was crap would it still run okay as when i get it going its fine??


Had to walk home last night as it let me down after running for 30mins and was only left for 20mins before trying,would the plugs still b hot as i thought once the engine was hot it did not need to use the plugs??? went first thing to try again and it fired up after thrid try but got aload of diesel smoke out the bck but again would not start later on in the day??????

Does sound like your plugs have you tried a new set yet,do not be tempted to go for the cheap ones on fleabay Duatherms are the best.

I have a mk2 model and the filter is on the rear left hand side just about in line with the steering wheel.
Should have a few plastic pipes on top and an large plastic screw nut.
The drain will obv be underneath the cannister.

I would also reccommend some fuel injector cleaner and give it a good blast on the m/way.

Yes done the plugs cost me 40quid lol,gona get this heater box and il remove all me plugs and make sure there all heating up.
If they are im gona change filter and drop some diesel from the tank as there may b water mixed in.

Gaz,try a test light on the wire that goes to the glow plugs,get someone to switch the ignition to the relavant place when the light goes out on the dash there should be power to the glow plugs for a little longer.To test glow plugs i always use a battery and jump leads,if they glow red hot theyre fine if they stay black and sooty bin em!.
Also if i remember right there's a manal pump for pulling the deisel up if you run out etc.... there might be a one way valve in that,which could have died (its a log time ago so forgive me if im wrong)but this valve is a 1 way and stops diesel going back to the tank

Thnks for replys guys,seems to start when its cold after afew goes,got it goin this afternoon but run lumpy until i got past 3k had to run a gear down so i did not stall it.
After 10mins of driving and blastin the pedal it cleared and run great,did a further hours driving got home turned of but needed to bob out again 5mins later but it failed to start??????
Looks like im gona have to drop the diesel when it gets low and change the filter,is there a drain pug on the tank as i had aa quick look but could not see one.

Sounds like its got petrol in it to me TBH, sounds exactly like my 407 Hdi Pug went around 6 or 7 years back, the RAC guy diagnosed it. Started fine on that can of ether stuff they start a diesel on but then stalled again after. Turned out garage delivery driver put petrol in diesel tank. I put in 20quids worth of diesel in an almost quarter full tank & drove that car missing and hesitating for 25 miles due to necessity, the injectors and hi-pressure diesel pump were stuffed, 1,500quid all in all!

Alittle update:

Now sorted was the bloody heater box got one from scrapyard for 20quid and all is well.
