My alloy wheel respray is finally complete (pics when they're on the car and I can be arsed to take photos!), but I now need to get some tyres (185/55 R14) fitted on them. I WAS going to buy some Hankook Ventus's for £32 a piece off www.mytyres.co.uk but they don't sell 'em any more :(
I've been quoted £47 per tyre (inc fitting) for Avon ZV3's by a local tyre place; anyone know if these are any good?

Don´t do Hangkook. Those have a very bad reputation around here. Delivered as standard on earlier Hyundais I know. Don´t buy tyres at the cheapest price. The tyres are those who stick to the road, hence the most important investment after good brakes.

Try the TOYO TS-1's i got some and have been well impressed, miles better than the nankang things the previous owner stuck on.

Those things were scary, i got the TOYO's for £30 a piece fitted and ballanced as well.

Cheap as Chips

Don´t forget the rainy days. The car has to handle well even then. I´d definitely go for Continental, Good Year or Marangoni H-rated tires.

I´m done with budget tires after some rather "near-nasty" incidents.

I'll second Morts advice, I'm pleased to say as of last week my Cinq is a Nankangs free zone and I can't believe the difference!

I'd rather not eat and save up for good rubber rather than use cheapos again.

When i was getting new tyres i went to get nankangs fitted and they refused to fit them, he said he was worried about road noise/ quality of the tyre... i dont know whether he was (he is a mate of mine) or he just wanted more money.

Anyway i bought pirellis in the end so all is well :D

Thanks for asking this Jonny, I'm getting new tyres fitted on Tuesday and was about to ask this when I saw your thread. I have Goodyear tyres on now which see OK, may stick with these unless anyone has any better recommendations for long lasting but sticky-in-the-wet tyres?

i will be going for continental (185/50 14) next time i need to new tyres, im using pirelli at the mo, but at £63 a tyre, they quite expensive, i sudder too think how much the good year are :(

Hei.

After I swithced tyres to Good Year´s "Eagle Ventura" I must say: "This IS a tasty tire". There are no water planning (or what it´s called), no speed reduction when driving through puddles/ponds in the street, and no pulling to the sides. The handling also improved and the steering wheel centers correctly.

A story from this summer: I was able to keep track of an Audi A6 2.7 when driving to North-Norway. How? It was uphill 9%, and a very curvy road. In the curves, the Audi lost grip at the rear, making me drive at it, able to see what he had in the boot (it was an Avant). On the straight he pulled away ofcourse. I´m convinced this was due to poor and good tyres. The 50bhp Uno really sucked itself to the asphalt getting help from the anti-roll bar and lowering kit. I managed to keep my speed at 110 kmph in 3rd gear the whole mountainside up, straight and curves, and reach the top as fast as an Audi with much more engine power.

To mention: It was raining and wet conditions.

Great fun and very bragable... Thank you, Good Year.

Well, I've gone and bought Avon ZV3's, as they were the best tyre I could afford (Motosave quoted me £56 a corner for A539's but that's far too much cash!); unfortunately I can't tell you how the Avons handle as I only bolted the alloys onto the car half an hour ago!
The wheels look WICKED :D, pics to follow when I've had some munch and given the car a good wash...

Downside? £188 for four tyres...ouch...they had better be worth it

Let's see some pics :D

I've just got a silver set with low mileage Falkens and Avons, and the longer bolts for about the same price
