Lowering improves handling

A good exhaust system and induction kit setup always helps.

If you have got cash to spend get an engine conversion

Check out various threads using the search facility which should help you out (y)

how much would it cost for an engine conversion as well as buyin the new engine?

Depends on what engine. Rough figure from about 300-400 (1242SPi DIY) up to a few grand (1.4 Uno Turbo)

Broken record alert!

Sort out the handling and braking and then you'll be able to better use the existing lump, no point in having more power as you will only really gain in the straights.

Cornering is where the bigger cars lose out so that's where you need to concentrate, later braking speeds and more stable cornering speeds mean a lot in the real world.

All that said I do not condone or promote racing.speeding/dangerous driving on the public roads.
