Technical transmission seal

I have a 1974 X1/9 that has been sitting up for a long time (10? years). My mechanic got it running but doesn't want to work on it. The immediate problem is a leak at the seal where the gear-selector rod enters the transmission. I think I can get the part. Does anyone know whether the seal is seated from the outside? If so, I think I could do it and would have the mechanic haul the car to my house. If it is seated from the inside, I don't want to try and need to develop Plan B.

I have been told that the bushing seal installs from the outside, so I've ordered one and will see.
