Temperature Gauge

t'99 1.6 hlx. my temperature gauge has a mind of its own!!!sometimes it shots up, even when the car is quite cold.i expect it to go up when i'm in traffic on a hot day, but sometimes it'll shot up when i'm driving along on a rainy/**** day.i've tried the usual slap on the dash, OK it goes down, but a minute later it's back up. like i said, it doesnt happen all the time.could it be a faulty thermostat?
(water is always topped up)

re guage

could be the guage itself or the sender. usually though it is a wiring fault. A case of elimination

The gauge losses contact in the dash, slaming the dash over it with hand will cure it, or use one of the gudes to repair the contacts

that used to happen to mine. also sometime i used to get in my car on a cold morning and the temp gauge would be above cold mark before i even started it! fuel gauge was inaccurate aswell. i give the dash a good whack and there fine now
