Technical Temp Gauge

Morning all, I bought a 1.4 12v back in October, since then I have had to replace both front and rear wipers, exhaust and tyres, oh and the oil feed pipe was clogged with tar and the cam was not a cam but a circular piece of crap.
Thanks to FAST in Stockton for sorting that out.
My lastest problem is that the temperature gauge keeps fluctuating from just above cold to the midway point, is this a faulty sensor or thermostat please tell me it's cheap and easy to fix.

you don't say if the fluctuation is when you're on the move or sitting still in traffic, had thermostat problem with sis's 1.4 12v, gauge was constantly low and heater was really poor, changed stat and gauge now reads just under half when up to temp with slight increase up to half point and back when in traffic (ie as heats up and fan cuts in and out), and heater is superb, approx £16 + vat at shop4parts ( two bolts and couple of hose clips and you might get wet).If guage needle fluctuates up and down regardless I reckon its an electrical prob so look at the sensor and wiring first, hope this helps
