1: Flitting rocker arm + tappets from the head I'm taking off and installing on new head , question is : I will have to readjust all tappets is this correct ?

2:What is the best/quickest/most reliable way of accomplishing this ? i.e clearances firing order + anything else anyone can advise me on ?

worth double checking but
.4mm +/- .05mm in (inlet valve)
.5mm +/- .05mm out (exhaust valve)

tappets need adjusting at TDC of each cylinder on the compression stroke.
turn the engine clockwise (looking at the crank pulley) and watch the inlet tappet open and close then keep turning untill that cylinder reaches the top of its stroke, then adjust.

He's got an 899, so different to a sporting.

If i still remember use the rule of 5. Take spark plugs out. put it in gear. Rock the car forward and backs. If tappets is rocking on cylinder 1(both tappets on the same cylinder are moving up and down like a rocking horse), then adjust the tappets on cylinder 4.

To adjust, have the tappets just touching surface then tigten the preload scre at the back.

am sure rallycinq will confirm anything i missed!

sporting is an OHC on shims and buckets so no tappets to adjust it took me 2 hours to take clearances take the cam of measure and rearrange shims then do the maths to get the shims back in the correct order (it had obviously been pre-enjoyed by a prvious owner)

that rule of 5 is correct! when cyl 1 is on "the rock", as its affectionately known, then cyl 4 will be at the top of its compression stroke. when cyl 2 is on the rock then adjust cyl 3, when 3 is on the rock adjust 2 and finally when 4 is on the rock adjust 1.

firing order is 1,3,4,2.

mick if u need tighening torques/sequences give me a shout and ill dig them out

Thanks very much Got These ..

Re Cylinder head ! Kinda Urgent Guys !

Taken day off to finish job BUT ! taken old head off and noticed the lining up (dowells or locaters i think they are called) on cylinder head bolts 7+9 front left and front right stud holes as looking from front , well the left is definitely not there . These are absolutely needed right ?? All the way to the scrappy for this thing the size of a thick washer 2 hrs there n back

they're not essential... i lined up my headgasket by eye and superglued each corner then gently put the head on and tightened down if you dont fancy tat the make one its just a cylindrical tube

Any ideas what to make one out off also if the head is located correctly I cant see this being a weak spot as the actual head bolt surface is just flat to flat with nothing between the block and Head Dowell wise so am I right in thinking it's just a locater ? .. Thanks for your Quick reply

tis just a locator... anything be intuative stiff cardboard bit of plastic anything that would be strong enough to hold the HG in place i assume you still have 1 locator left in the block?

Just a locator, yes.

Tappets, as Ming says, rule of 5.

Then, turn the tappet you are adjusting till it just touches, then one and a half turns more then lock it off.

Cheers

Hi Dave , So you reckon I could get away with 1 locater , if you reckon its a YEA I'll give it a go Cheers

Thanks Dave re Tappets in my other post Whiz reckons they might be self adjusting tappets ? ?
