56 plate 1.4 petrol tappets knock when cold. it got a cam as apposed to rocker arm.but whats under it . lifters !! hy-tappet.!! or mechanical !!. HELP

is it an 8v or 16v? are you running the right grade oil?
It'll be an 8v with shim adjustable tappets. Adjusting them every ~36k miles is in the service schedule, don't know if anyone ever does.
Mine does the same from cold, buts its not noticeable when driving just a bit of noise on startup and it quietens down quickly and is fine when hot.

Noticed that even the 'gold' service at my local fiat dealer doesn't include adjusting tappets.
Hi, I have just bought a 56 plate 1.4 about 4 weeks ago and have only recently noticed the cold start tappet noise (I had the window down when starting and noticed the noise, which I hadn't heard before), but as you say the noise goes away when the engine has warmed up. Do you know if this is an expensive thing to rectify and /or does it cause any long term harm if not rectified? Does it also need to be a Fiat dealer who does the work?
