One of the six wheelers was the Tyrell P34, with four 10 inch front wheels, the theory being that they disturbed the air flow over the body less. The car won a couple of Grand Prix, but became obsolete when ground effects came in. The other 6 wheeler was a Williams FW07 with four rear wheels. This was only used in testing and was for a similar idea to the Tyrell, that 4 smaller rear wheels left more room for larger venturis at the rear, and better airflow over the rear wing.

Of course these are in what I would term 'modern times'. The 1930's Auto Unions had twin rear wheels, on the same axle, for better traction of 500+BHP, through very skinny tyres.
