It is because the red and blue triangles have a different hypotenuse - but not that obvious from the picture.

Therefore, it is just an optical illusion!
 
Parts maths, part optical illusion. Use Pythagoras to calculate the hypotenuse of the big triangle, you get 13.9 units.

Do the same again for the two smaller triangles. Red comes to 9.4 and blue comes to 5.3

When the two are combined in the 2nd example their combined length represents the total length of the hypotenuse and suddenly....... its increased from 13.9 to 14.7 units.

The two triangles have different ratios, therefore the angle of the hypotenuse from the baseline will be slightly different between the two, the blue is steeper than the red and when combined at 90deg as in the second example the line wont be perfectly straight, this is what gives the extra 1 unit of area. The square-hatching provides the illusion and hides the fact the line is not straight.

The second triangle isnt a triangle at all, its a quadrilateral.
