Re: 'Judder' at high speed

Guys... if the "judder" only occurs when the car is heavily laden and throttled up cant this be a coil pack or plug breaking down?

OP says the judder goes away when he lifts off the throttle, an out of balance wheel wouldnt be affected by that, neither would a dodgy tyre.

Just a thought. (y)

Re: 'Judder' at high speed

Sounds like it could be differential - but hopefully not!

Certainly worth getting all 4 wheels checked for balance and tyres checked for deformation first though.

A neat trick which will cost nothing is to simply transpose rear and front wheels. If the problems remains exactly the same then you can ignore tyres/wheels.

could the differential cause the car to wobble and shake, but wouldnt you hear a noise if the diff is going.

Cheers guys, Ill get the wheels balanced first and see what happens, it wouldnt hurt to have them done anyway. It is strange how it only does it when heavy, at 70 with just me in there theres no vibration at all.

Cosso, its an Abarth this one.

Yeah... same problem here... '02 2.4 Abarth Selespeed. Occurs under load (acceleration) at approx 60-80 kph, disappears if you take foot off throttle, worse when turning right.
Have had wheels checked (repaired one that was slightly out of shape), 4 x wheels balanced, wheel alignment done. Engine mounts & cvs/driveshafts checked. Even used different set of wheels/tyres. Still there. :bang::bang:
Getting a Fiat expert to take a look hopefully this week.

Glad you picked up this thread as there are plenty of tips to try before you begin spending money that you dont need. I noticed that the previous people all mentioned pretty much all the areas which you should check over in order to resolve the problem with the wobbly steering except one which is your alloys.

I while back my old stilo suffered from a wobbly steering wheel between 55 & 65 MPH. Took it to a garage, had the wheels re balanced and the tracking done and nothing changed. Later found out that I had 2 swelled up lumps on my front tyres but the main cause was a bucked alloy.

I recently bought a 2004 1.6 3door stilo which I am very pleased with but it has a strange wobble/vibration.

The whole car feels as if it is wobbling from side to side but it does not come up through the steering wheel. The wobble begins to start at about 50mph, is at its worst at 60mph and stops at above 70mph. It only does it when accelerating ( light or hard), which can be in 3rd,4th or 5th gear, as soon as you remove your foot from the accelerator the wobble stops.

I have had all 4 tyres replaced and the tracking altered. None of the wheels appear to be buckled. An independant fiat specialist has checked the engine mounts and cv joints but they are not able to find the a fault. There is a slight oil leak from the gearbox which is being monitored.

Has anyone had similar a problem and did you find a cure?

I have a similar problem. The car shakes violently when taking off only when the engine's cold and only in the moment where the clutch bites. No problems when moving. I changed the gearbox mount and it actually got better for a while but it's now the almost same again. I checked the gb mount and it's fine; the previous one was torn. I also have a slight leak from the gearbox but it loses approximately 10 grams a year. In your case I would say your wheels are not properly balanced or you have bent brake discs. Have you checked the gb mount? Sometimes it's hard to notice a small rapture. You could also check your drive shafts and test the car on rollers to see what causes that shaking. Do you have any play on the wheels, have you checked the bearings? Good luck (y)

EDIT: Just read that you've solved it :) What was wrong with the differential? Get's me really worried..

SORTED!!! Tracked the problem to the lefthand inner CV joint... replaced the whole L/H driveshaft assembly with a 2nd hand (good) one and the problem is fixed!! Apparently it's not unheard of that the tripod CV sticks or wears a channel in the bell housing... in my case there was obvious heat damage to one of the rollers maybe from a lack of lubrication (the oil/grease was missing also).
