Stilo Dynamic 1.6 3 door

Being a new Stilo owner I have noticed a worrying engine knock when I first start my car in the morning. It lasts for about 4 seconds and then it's OK.

If I start the car after a stop of approx 6 hours it's still OK, It just appears to be when I leave it for long periods ie overnight.

Any of you other Stilo owners experiencing the same problem??

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum, Dawn & Ash.

I hope my referral counter has gone up by one point :)

No ideas about the knocking sound, but we have a few 1.6 owners on here who are bound to come to your help soon.

Mine knocks til it warm, but then its a diesel, so that ok ;)

When you say knocks, how loud is it? TBH, every car I have owned have has been a little noisy when cold, as long as its a noise which has always been there, I would except it is just the engine warming up.

Is your oil level well up btw?

Stu, does yours knock at all? As AFAIK cars with odd numbers of cyclinders are a little out of balance and are noiser when cold, though this is worst with 3cylinders, which ain't exactly smooth at the best of times.

Welcome anyhow!

Stu, what you mean about referrals?

James,

These were the people who bought the Yellow 1.6 Abarth off eBay - I sent them an email via eBay to say congratulations on the purchase, and come and join us in the FF ;) - quick work, ay....

On startup of the 2.4, I can't recall any knocking noises; the burble is too loud, possibly. It is a bit jerky when you drive away, but warms up very quickly.

The 1.6 does have a habit of sounding a little agricultural in the morning, although I've only experienced it when really cold.

From discussions I've had in the past it seems that this is a 'characteristic' (FIAT's description!) of the engine and isn't anything to worry about.

Sounds like oil is draining back down to the sump and it's taking a few seconds at startup to get it back up to the top of the engine to silence the rattling.

I see mate, don't you mean the 1.6 Dynamic with Abarth badges on, the one whose advertiser I called names for trying to trade falsly on the Abarth badge

Mine sounds like a tractor first thing, and is a little sluggish, but suddenly it all seems to start working at once, it can catch you unawares if you're still tired, sluggish away from one junction, then takes off at the next :D

Yep! that was me who bought the Yellow 1.6 Dynamic. I would have preferred the Stilo last week on ebay for £4554 with 14,000 miles, but there you go.

Anyway, the noise does sound head/valve like after which it is totally quiet as you would expect for a 24,000 mile engine.

Thanks for the reply

My 1.6 makes a screach when its cold, but i do believe that to be the starter motor, no knocking though

That not the alternator belt slipping? Does it happen more when its wet? Get is tightened, else it will snap ;)

Stu, I'm not affriad to tell the truth, I'm certainly not going to pretend my car is perfect, but then who's car on the forum is? Apart from the kids with their dream machines that is :D

Fact is, my car runs on Diesel, as such it isn't quite as refined as a petrol engine, BUT, I still prefer it overall, when considering the style of performance and economy.

All cars with hydraulic tappets are a little "tappety" when they first start after sitting for a while. Even my old MKIII Escort was!

If fact its probably worse these days, 'cos oil is so thin so it runs back into the sump more quickly.

Although i can say the 1.2 isn't very tickey when it starts, its got such a teeny engine you can hardly hear it when you start. :p

My cars make an awful sound in the morning especially now its winter, but when it warms up its fine, theres just a little rattle, i think i need oil

definetly normal, hydrolic tappets and the likes. my old rover with the K series in it sounded like a diesel at startup, was the norm. My 1.2 in the brava does alot of ticking for the first minute then goes quiet again. Ive noticed it on the 1.6 in the stilo and just ignore it anyway
