I have a 1.6 02 dynamic and other than the intermitant airbag fault, she has been great until 2 days ago. Driving and suddenly out of the blue she started to lose power, then would pick up, this happened on and off until I got home, she also seem'd very sluggish and chuggy, no faults showed up on dash, although battery light flashed on and there is no problem starting her and she sounds normal when turning over . Was adviced to look at the coils, although she didn't seem to be misfiring, changed one on christmas eve. Went to drive her today and 2 mins from home she started to lose power again and this time she displayed engine Fault. Anyone any ideas what could be the cause :)

Hey. I believe there is a guide about this in the Stilo section. Something to do with the inlet control valve being clogged or something. Have a quick dash over there.

1.6 power loss

Can anyone help, my stilo totally out of the blue has been losing power, I cleaned the inlet control valve and although it has made a vast improvement the fault is still intermittently there.....anyone any other ideas ??????

Re: 1.6 power loss

It crashed on me so I just opened a new thread...seem'd the easy solution.

Have checked the coils and the plugs and they are all fine....i'm running out of ideas as it is not displaying any faults and is ticking over perfectly

Re: 1.6 power loss

To lose power and then pick up again then it's more likely to be an electrical fault but there's not much information there to go on

Could be intermittent rpm sensor/ecu earth/injector earth but you'd waste a lot of time trying to check all that lot

Your car has recognised a fault and will have stored its findings so it'll be well worth having the freeze frame data or the stored fault code read so you can pinpoint the area that needs investigation

I'll see if i can get these threads merged so they make more sense to the reader

At someone's suggestion I got the AA out and the faults that where stored read

Fuel Sensor, which the guy adviced me to ignore??????? and a misfire on all 4 cylinders in cycle order, 1,3,2,4 which is impossible as the engine would not have been running.

Does anyone have any detailed information on how to clean and retrain throttle flap (learn throttle movement) I have looked under the guides and haven't found anything.

I am thinking my problem is to do with the throttle as she drives herself, chitty chitty bang bang eat your heart out. I am assuming the throttle is sticking on, which is not good in these snowy conditions. She might have been doing that the whole time, but I only noticed she was running away with me as I was deliberately trying to go slow. I can take both feet of the peddles and not only does she cost along nicely at 10mph, but at times she will even pick up speed

I have had the car on the Mgt system and she showed up no faults ??????? it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

its supposed to run itself (otherwise it would stall if you remove your foot off the accelerator) and yes.. if e.g. you release the accelerator it will accelerate to the 'normal' idle speed (assuming the engine was below that) and hold steady at that speed.. so in 3rd gear that sounds about right.. should you wish to clean the throttle flap.. there is a guide in the guides section (yes it is very detailed) should you with to retrain it.. get in the car & put key to mil (normal ON position) do not start the engine and let it stay like that for 1 minute (all the while listening to the noise of the throttle flap moving up and down) then remove the key and let the vehicle stand for another minute.. that's it..

Ps: you might find it helpful to read the wiki or howstuffworks article on internal combustion engines and injection system in particular

Just as the same as if your heart misses a beat, it won't kill you, then it's the same with your car, it can misfire
and still keep running very easily. Your car diagnostics fault detection doesn't lie, if it detected a misfire on all 4 cylinders then there was a misfire on all 4 cylinders and most likely on more than one occasion.

So there's your clues, it won't be plugs, individual coils or the throttle valve. It's an intermittent fault which affects all cylinders so maybe ECU/ rpm sensor etc, things which could give a misfire on all 4 cylinders

Having the engine maintain tickover on its own at the lowest rpm is great for travelling around in these slippery conditions with the least possible power
