Hi having a few problems with a recently purchased stilo 1.6 16v on a 2002.
First thing in morning car takes usually 2 goes before the car fires, on first try the car just turns over freely but doesnt fire. But when car as warmed up are after driving for a few miles if i try to restart when the engine is hot it can take 7 or 8 trys before it will fire again every time it turns freely.

Ive tried cleaning some earth points and changed all spark plugs(all old ones looked fine and nice light brown colour.Tried electrical cleaner on electrical connectors and cleaned battery terminals but still same. This problem seams to have been with car when i bought it, last week car started and drove 1 mile and engine stop light came on and engine would not start after a while and many tries engine fired up but would not idle stalled straight away, restarted and kept revs up and got home, after restarting car idled ok again but engine light still on, had codes read and came back with
P0105 manifold absolute pressure sensor circuit
P0460 fuel level sensor circuit
P0130 02 sensor signal before cat

anyone any ideas whats going off and any recommendations of what to check and what to change first.

Apart from above starting problem and then the cut out the car runs great, idles at 700/750 rpm goes like stink and returning around 30 mpg around town, i dont want to have to take the car to fiat with a lot of costs involved.

Check your rpm sensor air gap. About .020" is good, any more than that and the ECU misses the engine rpm and crank position so it won't allow fuel and ignition on start up

Your P0105 and P0460 fault codes have nothing to do with your starting problems but your P0130 needs investigation if it keeps coming up

P0460 will be because your battery voltage got low with prolonged starting and with low fuel in tank

Thanks for the advice, i have noticed the car as had a new cam belt fitted last year i wonder if the timing is off or do you think i would have other problems too, or as you say above that the rpm air gap is wrong or possibly dirty, i will have to check this but need a heads up to where the rpm sensor is and what i need to take off to check it. Is the rpm sensor same as the crank sensor.

If the car runs great one moment but not the next then it won't be cam belt valve timing

When they remove the crank pulley shown here to replace the belt then it's very easy to knock the rpm/crank sensor

Access from the driver's side wheel arch. Put some feeler gauges in the gap between the sensor and the serrated pick up ring. As long as it's not touching the ring then the closer the better

Had 3 jobs to do on stilo today replaced pads on rear, replaced lamp on rear and last job was investigate the rpm/crank sensor. Took drivers wheel off and inner plastic cover and could see straight away there was about a 5mm gap from the sensor and the seperator pickup ring so took the sensor off gave it a good clean with some contacor spray and refitted with correct gap and all sorted started instantly now everytime so you where spot on with the advice and saved me some expense and trouble so thanks alot.
I thought i had bought some trouble with this car so far replaced front wiper motor, exhaust upto cat, rear pads, stereo, 2 rear tyres, rear lamp, then after all that this starting problem so relieved it was simple fix, just got sqeeky front brakes to look at and air con not working, but most of above are wear and tear so cant complain it is a 8 year old car and love it to bits.

Well car been running fine for weeks not one problem, just got car thru mot needed some front spings thats all , but this morning girl friend got up started the car as usual got to the end of the road and car died with engine managment light now back on, car will not idle just keeps dieing if revs arent kept up, ooooo shes not a happy bunny and shes ready to go get a can of petrol and matches. I have told her you can have this sort of problem with any car and once we have found the fault all will be well, but think shes lost confidence in the car completely and with 2 kids in the car ages 3 and 7 its not much good letting her down, any advice would be helpfull, car going tomorrow for code reading once again.

It was fine when you were driving it wasn't it? So it has to be your girlfriend's fault:)

As it started fine then it wont be the rpm sensor this time. Could be many things, even a simple ignition coil gone, best to wait for the fault code

Yep i will tell her its her fault lol , i like sleeping in the dog kenel anyway. Wish i had bought a code reader cable now, need to reset ex wifes stilo 1.4 service light, might have a look for one.

well gf took car in other day and light was reset i asked for code and mechanic said they wasnt a code logged, but now cars running fine again but for how long.....to be continued
