hi ive got a 2.4 which has a stiff gear change when going from left to right or right to left for example when in neutral if you push all the way to the left it stays there and gets worse when ive been driving it, oil level is correct and so is type 7590 as it was changed when i changed my slave cylinder just wondering if anyone has come across this before i go and dig out the problem myself any help would be much appreciated

I think Gadge is right. If you take off the gaiter you can lubricate the selector mechanism.
Also worth checking, the operating cables should be held in a clip under the car and this sometimes comes undone.

But at the end of the day the 2.4 box is not the smoothest change in the world, particularly when cold.

I have the same problem on my Abarth... It's now so bad I can't select reverse!
Any ideas???

If you get a flat ended screw driver and gently prize the gator off you will see the linkage quite easily. I would think the problem is probably that it's just really dry so a squrit with some WD40 and then a good dabbing with some bearing grease should see that loosening up (y)

Have a look over on the Marea forum: it'll be the linkage pivots at the gearbox which need lubrication. Quite easy to do & lots of info about this over there.

have same problem with my stilo 1.9 and want to know if selectors compatible for all engine sizes ie 1.2 to 1.9?

Re: Stiff Gear stick
Solved it!
Had exactly the same on Stilo 03. Stiff gearstick across the box, not self centreing. The control cables run from the lever end to the box. You can disconnect the cables by prising the nipple off with an open ended spanner, I used 12mm. (I had to remove the air filter to manifold tube to gain access). The rear one is the transverse movement, once it is removed you can tell if it is the cable or gear lever end as it would be stiff in the sleeve. It won't be. The nipple is connected to a shaft which runs through a gearbox mounting and actuates the plunger (under the rubber cover in the photo above) which changes gear inside the gearbox.
Once the nipple is off, I found that the shaft was very stiff and wouldn't move. Undo the nut on the end of the shaft (17mm socket) and tap out the shaft using a long screwdriver and hammer (towards the back of the car on the Stilo). A little lever is attached to the nut end which is located in position by a flatted section on the shaft so you can't mess up the position on reinstallaion, this has to come off to get the shaft out. The shaft was a bit rusty. I sanded off the rust with some sand paper and made double sure by sanding the diameter down a bit. I oiled it up & put it back together and hey presto! a bit of italian 'engineering' is back running better than new! Car is now a pleasure to drive with gearstick springing smartly back to centre.

I have similar problem with my stilo 1.9jtd. Local expert suggested removing gaiter, undoing nut at bottom of gear lever and greasing. Problem is that a normal spanner will not fit in the space available. Can't use tube or box spannaer because it would fit over gear knob.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Don't bother, 'cos the problem is usually at the gearbox end of the selector cables - see above posts

Have a question for the 2.4, i understand its not the best change in the world, but mine is quite notchy during changes even when hot..normal or worn syncros?
