I'm currently replacing the LEDs in my car from orange to white and I've got to the ones for the steering wheel controls and to remove the circuit boards for those it seems I will have to remove the airbag unit from the wheel.

From the eLearn CD it seems I wont need to disconnect the electronics for it, just remove it from the wheel center to be able to disconnect the wheel mounted controls (they're wired together behind the airbag module)

Does anyone know what tool is required to do this? eLearn shows "extractor" which just looks to be a small round metal bar that slots into two holes either side of the steering wheel to depress some clips inside the wheel. There are some generic ones on ebay - anyone have experience with those?

This previous thread shows what procedure is required but not the actual tool.

Cheers, Gavin

Edit:
Found a solution - should have searched harder first time! :bang:

Seems a star headed screwdriver does the job, possibly more to do with it being blunt ended than specifically a star.

from what i have seen in the past a set of ball ended alen keys can also be used once the wheel is punctured on the dimples......

Take the battery off first anyway and follow dannys instructions on the thread you linked to...

Good luck with the soldering and be sure to post some pictures when done (y)

its is easy enough to seperate the buttons without having to take the bag out, you just need to carefully prize the two bits out and then pull of the front cover, you can leave them plugged in and take the board out.

Why did you remove my picture? Are we no longer allowed to make jokes on the forum anymore?

Mayatt, are you sure? I've had the left hand side one partly out, and I removed button cover itself from the circuit board, however the wires themselves are soldered to that circuit board and disappear below the airbag.

This listing on ebay (selling by someone on here actually) shows the wires in situ

Today I also needed to remove the airbag for replacing the stalking unit.
Searching on YouTube I found this instruction.
Torx 25 screwdriver did the job.
