I have a MK1 Punto but also a MK2, the MK2 has the electric power steering. Could I take the whole steering rack and put it in the MK1?

I shouldn't see why there would be any problems as all it looks to be doing it the shaft controls the steering rack but, with a motor..?

Hope you can help guys.

Thanks.

There was power steering on some Mk1s (essentially for people who couldn't be bothered to blow the front tyres up), but it's a conventional pump driven system.

Retrofitting the Mk2 stuff would be very difficult (not even sure the rack or the column are the same size) and they're not very reliable at the best of times...........

Just to confirm what has already been stated, our Cabrio has power steering (essentially to assist in turning the fully inflated wide, low profile tyres ;)). It should be possible to transfer the whole assembly including pump to another Mk1 Punto.

There's a complete Punto GT power rack and pump on eBay for about £70. Mechanical power steering is better than the electric set up from the mkII. Unless you need the sisy button that is. Mounting the pump to the engine could be tricky. The ac pump bracket from a newer Punto could fit I have one in my shed if you need it. :)
