Don't agree. If like a lot of 500 owners you're driving the car through stop start traffic then it's going to save you fuel, kind of a nobrainer really.

Depends what you want out of a car. I prefer to make the decisions myself - i.e when to put the wipers on, when to turn the lights on and when to turn the engine on and off. It's actually quite easy to work out. That and the fact that the system is by no means perfected. So, only a nobrainer for some.

Of course and I agree. I don't like ESP, auto lights, auto wipers etc. You can still switch S&S off anyway :)

the system is useful, and you DO have to choose to use it by taking the car out of gear and releasing the clutch to activate it- quite a different driving style to the one i had previously- which was to sit in gear when stationary generally.

so you are def still 'making the decisions'. :D

ths system may not be perfect, but i dont believe any stop start is- for instance many other makers systems dont work in temps of less than 5C-

fiats does...and i like not wasting fuel when im not moving..:D

How instant is it on start up, say when you are waiting at a busy junction and you have to make a split decision to go for it or wait all day. I just find that todays electronic throttles already have a slight delay and then having to also wait for the engine to restart would just drive me nuts. How realistic are any fuel savings.

It's meant to be pretty much instant but not having driven it I couldn't say tbh

you LITERALLY cannot get into gear quicker than it restarts as you depress the clutch...

so almost instantaneous .....at lights you do tend to watch more intently for them to go green as you are out of gear....but, as i said, its quicker to start up than any driver can engage first...:).....

so your not waiting at all....as for fuel savings, difficult for me to say....ive only had the stop start-

however i do tend to always follow the shift indicator, and this coupled with s/s does make me think MUCH more about efficient driving techniques...i average about 47mpg...

it really does take some getting used to, but now if i drive a car without s/s im habitually taking the car out of gear at a stop, then pondering how wasteful it is to have cars just 'ticking over' on idle....

i prefer to concentrate on driving rather than operating the car and worrying about fuel economy but i guess you have taken the bait of the ecomentalist movement

and regarding wasting energy having cars ticking over on idle, what about the energy used to re-start the engine - it isn't free...

not having a personal dig at you, just trying to put things in perspective (y)

Different people like different things I guess.

I'm quite enjoying my drive to work at the moment which is a 20 mile mix of narrow B roads and flowing A roads and I'm enjoying getting 56mpg indicated and not braking unless I need to stop :D If I was to get the revs up I'd arrive minutes earlier at most and burn a lot more fuel as there's practicallly nowhere safe to overtake.

I'm going for a trip on the weekend and I'll be surprised if I don't beat Mark's record of 57.2 mpg for a petrol 500.

is this from a a new trip reset for the journey?

Its also commonsense that we not only all play a part in the conservation of fuels but the air we and our children have to breathe.

In what way..............?

In what way..............?

Maybe this could be one you can answer, S&S is great for the most part.

But ive found when pulling away from lights (when im first off the mark), the lag between the engine starting up & when ive put my foot on the accelerator kinda lags n usually results in me revving higher than intended.... or just stalling, is this just because my cars only got 250miles on the clock so its still tight... or if S&S is only really of use when behind traffic & getting away quick isnt an issue?

Apart from that, S&S is great, at the moment i dont let it kick in when i want to get off the line but when behind cars in traffic or behind cars at the lights etc its brilliant.

I've got a stop/start with duologic, so mine starts a bit differently, I can either lift my foot off the brake, or I can knock the gear stick and it starts.

So as there is a very slight lag, or when the lights are on a hill, I knock it into gear when the opposite lights start changing, then I'm ready and raring to go!

Fair enough and I will turn off my car whenever I am stuck at a level crossing or motorway jam, but just don't need a computer to decide for me.
Probably some of the most polluted air around children is created by parents on school runs. I do not have anything to feel remotely guilty about thank you.

By the amount of posts on here about S&S problems

For me? It's over 332 miles sofar and the gauge still says I've got 3/8ths of a tank left. It also includes 3 commutes to and from the job I finished on Friday which was about half the distance that my commute this week has been. Now that the weather is getting warmer my economy is really picking up.

The last time I saw economy like this was on a run up from Kent when the car was fairly new and barely run in. I reckon with some careful driving you could get 60mpg out of a tank with a 1.2 pop on eco tyres on 14" rims in some decent weather and that's diesel hassling MPG! :D
