Hi all I have a stilo 1.2 16v aircon trying to locate starter motor in engine bay but cant locate it do I need to get under the engine ?

Well finally found were it is looks like gonna be job an a half to get it out as its nicely tucked away behind everything else !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to remove the starter motor on my 1.4 16v. Seems to be pretty inaccessible and can only see one bolt from underneath (and none from above). Anyone know if it's three bolts for this engine, or two? And any advice on how to get to the other one or two bolts that i cannot see? Do i need to remove the intake manifold to get to them from the top side?

I'm not that familiar with the engine but when I changed the clutch on my JTD, I got good access to the starter motor (it's bolted to the gearbox housing) from the top.. after I removed the battery box and the intake pipes from the airbox.

It's more time-consuming than difficult but it was worth it just for the amount of space you can create to work in.

Don't really know, but it sounds like the relative positions of the starter motor to the battery box are different between the JTD and the 1.4 16v engines? For the 1.4 the battery etc is left hand side whereas the starter motor is kind of dead centre-ish under the intake manifold. I think the motor has two diagonally positioned bolts holding it on - the one on the bottom side is no prob, but i can't fathom out how to get to the top one (either from the top end, bottom end or side thru the wheelarch). It kind of looks like the inlet manifold needs to be removed to get to it, but surely that doesn't make sense? Can anyone confirm, or otherwise?

The parts catalogue and Fiat dealer workshop manual show 2 bolts for the 1.4 engine starter motor.

Thanks again for the info. I did have a look at this on ePer, but thought that the bolt pattern on the motor shown there looked different from what I have (altho difficult to tell because I couldn’t actually see all of it and tbh I thought that ePer was saying that there was three bolts to undo – duh!), and looking at things from the top and from underneath, I didn’t think that removing the pipes would make access to the top bolt any easier. But I will pull them out and have a look again tonight.

The diagrams in ePER are just generic diagrams. You have to look at the Compatibility column to get the correct information for your engine. M5 and M6 are for the 1.4 engine. It shows quantity 2.

Even the Fiat dealer workshop manual (eLEARN) I posted diagrams from above seems to show 3 bolts.

Apols - it was actually eLearn and not ePer I had been looking at, the section you posted up. But, aye, this diagram from ePer that you've posted looks exactly right- the bolt I'm struggling to get to is the one visible on the picture (top bolt as i referred to), the other one which is diagonally opposite is no prob. Will have a look later.

Got it. The top bolt actually comes through from the gearbox side and is easily accessible from the topside. So a wee bit different from what it says on ePer and eLearn. I did remove the air pipes, but wasn't really necessary.
