Well I am pleased to report , as I suspected this did not mean the slave cylider is faulty nor the clutch requiring replacement. Oil is all that is required - to the release lever pivot under the battery tray. Our 2011 car is now silent. I only lubed this as I had the whole lot out to replace the thermostat again and it was visible. The other car is making the same racket so it will be treated to the same in the morning. Battery and battery tray out and some PTFE laced light oil. Silence is not just golden but total!

its originally packed silicon grease. The grease gets pushed out over time

eventually it sticks so much the return can't push it back and the pedal stays down

Thanks for unearthing this. I shall have a look at this in the morning while I have the battery out of the way. I need to use that silicon grease up before I die and there is not much else for it to do!!
Slipped the dust cover off lubed with sicon spray and silicon grease, als oiled the rusty clutch release shaft. For now the second car is also quiet. I will report if the issue returns. Thank you all for the siuggestions and ideas.

The clutch release lever pivots on two self lubricating bushes. The top bush can be sprayed with oil but the bottom bush is inside the clutch housing so cant be touched unless you remove the gearbox from the engine.

S4P sell replacement bushes for £6.50 each, but you'll have to wait for the clutch to be replaced before it's worth changing the bushes and maybe the release lever. It can get bent when people run a worn clutch for too long.
