Hi all!

Just a quick Q....

Do spoilers need to be notified to the insurance people?

I'll be fitting it if the insurance doesn't need to know.

Just bought an abarth spoiler for peanuts on eBay, funnily enough from Van Aaken!

Many thanks
Rich.

Seems like a grey area from what i've been reading...

Let me know though, could be useful info for the future.

Another day...another problem...

Yes you need to inform the insurace, if you have an accident and the insurance notice it, they wont pay up.

anything thay changes your cars specification from standard MUST be notified to your insurance company,i remember a case of a guy,s insurance claim being rejected cause he had put go-faster stripes on,a bit extreme but a warning to everyone.

You need to inform the insurance of 'material changes'. It should only affect the premium if it changes the performance or increases risk of theft, etc.

Dillinger is right, insurance is so tight now that assessors look for any excuse to default on payment.

Thats a bit gay though isn't it. what if you buy a cinq sporting with a spoiler already fitted. Mines got lots of stuff, "Just call me bad-ass!:D
I don't want to start having to fork out Loads more £££££ just because i have small power gains, i mean an exhaust system giving you what 6bhp if that, whats that gonna put the insurance up too???? too much thats what!!!! i put a stainless system on my cinq because the original rotted away and i didn't want that to happen again. if i crash il jus put some standard parts back on! mmm.. possible perhaps if you put your motor in a ditch, more difficult if you put someone else's car in a ditch and them in a wheelchair for life. When the claim comes in for half a million you don't want the insurance company to thumb their nose at you 'cos you done them out of an extra fiver a month.

Check around, some insurers are very mod friendly.

Its cost me £20 more per year to cover my side skirts, front splitter and rear abarth spoiler..if you ask me its worth paying the extra...especially if you run the risk of voiding your insurance if you dont tell them! :D

Im the one with the tat mobile...cheap and nasty is my first, middle and last name.

the rule to follow is call youre insurer BEFORE you make a mod to your car and if you buy a modded car(alex22;))then call for a quote on the spec of the car,as polecat says imagine someone in there modded undeclared car hits you and cripples you for life, how would you feel settling for a meagre civil payout instead of a decent insurer backed pay out.im the first to say insurance is way overpriced and they do anything to hike your payments and avoid paying out but its still better declaring ALL mods and taking a hit in the wallet[V]

Styling bits like spoilers/alloys/sideskirts etc make the car more attractive to dirty lowlife scumbag b***ards, sorry, I mean car thieves :D
So yes, the insurance is affected as it's more likely that your car will be nicked! As Custard Boy says, find out how much more it'll cost from your insurance company BEFORE you fit it.

I asked Directline I think spoilers are like 25% more, Does it mean im not insured coz i put a sunstrip in, or coz sum bastard nicked the back badges??? Best to get to the compound and snap bits off before the insurence get there.

Ill think of something witty....just wait and see............wait I might not.

what if your car is for example stolen/crashed in a high speed chase(okay i'm jazzing it up!) and then recovered to a police impound and your friendly insurance asseser goes to the police impound and goes eh! whats this a spoiler?undeclared? oh no theft pay out for you and oh,pay pc plod £120 for recovering your vehichle and another fee to get it from the impound

Best thing to do is use an insurance company that deal with modified cars. I remember (quite) a few years back the guy who bought my dads Brabham Vauxhall Viva seized it up on the M1 at 115mph, resulting in a bit of a shunt and no more Viva. The insurance company wouldn't pay out 1) because he was doing a police estimated 115mph and 2) because it was insured as a 1275HLE or something! He tried the old trick of "I didn't know it was modified (from the factory in this case)" and when he had no joy with the insurers tried to sue my old man!

At the end of the day, your insurance company needs to know anything which could change their evaluation of the risk, that means tell them everything. If you ever get hit by an uninsured driver, you'll soon change your opinion about insurance fraud and the like!
If you can't afford to insure a modified car then you can't afford to modify it. There are loads of specialist companies around who deal with modified cars, so ring round them, tell them the full story and you might be pleasantly suprised!

[:0] I feel a fool!
Maybe il tell em next time i re-insure:D
i already fork out around £85 a month for a "standard" sporting!! ARGH! guess its better to be honest than to get kicked in the ass.... financially!:D
thanks people you made me see sense...............and a hole in my wallet.[xx(]

Alex, you'd be better off telling them, you've just done the mods and you want to update their records of your vehicle. If you happen to hit me and your insurance is void, I wouldn't be a happy man, especially if I happen to be on a push-bike and you cripple me for life!
Please think about it! If someone hits you, through no fault of yours and they know your car is modified in anyway they'll tell their insurers and if your car is being driven illegally, ie: uninsured because your not being straight up, you won't get a penny either.
Sorry to be an aggravating old tw^t but I've had one car destroyed by an uninsured driver and I don't want another one!
