Technical Speedo no longer working

Hi folks...
A while back the engine and gearbox was taken out to upgrade engine,,rings bearings etc...since that the Speedo has stopped working..I am unsure of the issue,,mechanic seems to think something missing from gear box but I am unsure,I have new cable and have yet to fit it ... hoping that the new cable will sort the issue ....

Was anything done to the gearbox?
If not then cable should just reconnect.

Hi bugsy Mike ..no nothing done to the gearbox..was taken out attached to the engine ...it may have gotten a slight pull when dropping down the engine and gearbox....other than that....it is very difficult to see into the gear box ..I am guessing there is a part attached to the gearbox that just turns .. thank you so much for your help to date ... its much appreciated....
